  • They will notify the Buller District Libraries of any change of postal/residential address, phone number or email address.
  • They understand that they will no longer be eligible for a Buller District Libraries library membership if they move away from the West Coast districts, and will notify Buller District Libraries if they do so.
  • Buller District Libraries, a unit of Buller District Council, will collect their personal information. Although the information is not required by law, it is necessary if a person wishes to become a library member.

Data storage

We require the collection of members' data to enable us to offer services. This information may also be used to develop Library services on an ongoing basis.

The information/data will be held by Buller District Libraries and its library management provider which is part of a New Zealand-wide consortium of public libraries called Kōtui. This is managed by the National Library. (The National Library is part of the Department of Internal Affairs - DIA). From 8.00 pm, 15 May 2024, the data is being held in Australian based data centres, Equinix and YourDC. The library management system vendor is SirsiDynix.

Members have the right to see personal information about them held by Buller District Libraries, as per Principle 3 of the Privacy Act 2020. Members can ask for it to be changed at any time. Email library@bdc.govt.nz or phone 03 788 8030.

When a library membership has been inactive for three years, the membership is now automatically removed. This is due to data storage capabilities and to ensure we align with data retention guidelines and New Zealand privacy laws.

From 17 May 2024, members' data will stored at data centres in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Library membership expiry

Every 12 months our library management system asks us to renew your library membership, by checking your contact details are up-to-date. The system will temporarily make your account inactive, until your details are confirmed as being correct.

You can call into the library or phone us to re-activate your library card.

If your library card is inactive for 3 years, your library membership will be removed.

We remove inactive library memberships after three years due to our data storage capabilities and to ensure we align with data retention guidelines and New Zealand privacy laws.

If your library card has been deactivated after three years, and you would like to obtain a new library membership, the friendly library staff are more than happy to assist you.  You can do it at the library or online :)
